FAQ

Chemdawg: frequently asked questions

Short answers to the questions people search most about Chemdawg, each with its sources.

Is Chemdawg indica or sativa?

A hybrid. Databases disagree on the lean: AllBud says 55% indica, Leafly lists the Chem’s Sister cut as a sativa, and Leafly rates Chemdawg’s effects mostly energizing.1,2,3

What strain is Chemdawg?

A hybrid that grew from 13 seeds traced to a 1991 Grateful Dead show, kept alive as clones, whose family includes Sour Diesel, GG4, Stardawg and GMO Cookies.4,5,6,7

Is Chemdog the same as Chemdawg?

Yes. Chemdog is the breeder’s spelling and a registered apparel trademark; Chemdawg is the spelling Leafly and AllBud use, and Leaf Magazines credits Top Dawg Seeds with the “Dawg”.1,3,8,9

What is the difference between Chem D and Chem 91?

They are sister seeds from the same 13. Chem 91 is the 1991 female; Chem D was kept from seeds popped in 2001. Leafly describes Chem 91 as myrcene-led with chemical, skunk and ammonia flavors, and Canna Provisions describes Chem D as fuel-forward with diesel, earth and pepper.4,10,11 In our lab data, Chem D labels had a median THC of 24.73% (54 tests) and Chem 91 23.87% (341 tests).12

What is Chemdawg 4 (Chem 4)?

A later sibling, selected by Joe B. in 2006 from seeds Chemdog gave him and named the Reunion Pheno. Leafly lists it at 25% THC with a citrus or Pine-Sol nose, and it is the Chem parent of Stardawg.4,6,13,14 Flower labeled Chem 4 had a median THC of 22.67% (51 tests) in our lab data.12

What is Chem 91 Skunk VA (SkVA)?

The Chem 91 cut kept by a grower known as Skunk VA, who Weedmaps News says got it in 1995 via a grower nicknamed “Staten Island”. Weedmaps treats the SkVA cut as the authentic preserved clone, and Top Dawg Seeds built its Chem 91 BX seed line on it.15,16,17

What are Chemdawg’s parents?

Unknown. It grew from bag seed; Leaf Magazines lists an Afghan landrace, a Skunk phenotype or a Northern Lights descendant as theories, and some listings give Thai × Nepalese without a first-hand source.9,13,14

Is Sour Diesel bred from Chemdawg?

On one side, by most accounts: Sour Diesel is widely traced to Chem 91. Its other parent is disputed, either an unknown hermaphrodite (High Times) or Super Skunk (Leafly, Weedmaps News). Sour Diesel has its own guide at sourdiesel.com.4,15,18

How much THC does Chemdawg have, and does it have CBD?

A median of 22.94% total THC across 668 state lab tests, with the middle half between 19.25% and 25.37%. CBD is almost absent: 307 of the 546 tests that reported CBD found none, and the highest result was 0.41%.12

What does Chemdawg taste and smell like?

Diesel and chemical, with pine and citrus. Leafly users list chemical, diesel and pungent flavors; Weedmaps users most often report earthy, woody and diesel.3,16

Does Chemdawg make you sleepy?

Sources disagree. Leafly rates it mostly energizing and its users report euphoric, relaxed and tingly effects, while AllBud describes a sleepy body high alongside a clear head.1,3

What are Chem OG and Purple Chemdawg?

Separate crosses that reuse the name. Leafly lists OG Chem (also Chem OG or Chemdawg OG) as OG Kush × Chemdawg, and Purple Chemdawg (Purple Chem) as a Chemdawg × Granddaddy Purple cross. Neither is counted in our Chemdawg lab figures.12,20,21

Can you get original Chemdawg seeds?

No original seeds are known to be available. The 13 were germinated, given away or lost by 2011, and the originals survive as clones; seeds sold under the name are either lines bred from a cut or unrelated crosses.4,9,13,22,23
